Reception

At Gorse Hill Primary School, our Reception classrooms provide a rich and stimulating learning environment that supports all areas of the EYFS curriculum. We are fortunate to have a large, shared outdoor space that encourages exploration, physical development and collaborative play between age groups. As part of our planned provision, children engage in allocated sessions that include library time, mud kitchen activities, woodwork, and outdoor physical play, making use of equipment such as balance bikes, scooters and the trim trail. These experiences are carefully designed to promote independence, creativity, and gross and fine motor skills, while also supporting children’s personal, social and emotional development.

Each area of learning and development is implemented through planned, purposeful play, and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities. Staff respond to each child’s emerging needs and interests, guiding their development through warm, positive interaction.

Through the Reception year, and as their development allows, the balance gradually shifts towards more adult-led activities to help your child prepare for more formal learning in year 1.
