Gorse Hill School Learning & Education

Overview

There is a national curriculum set for each subject and each year group that ensures children at Gorse Hill Primary School and Nursery get the best education possible.

Aims

Our curriculum is:

  • Focused upon high standards in mathematics, reading, and writing, as well as being broad and balanced, providing plenty of opportunities for enrichment.
  • Exciting and stimulates our pupils’ imaginations.
  • Progressive, ensuring continuity from nursery to year 6.
  • Focused upon providing a firm foundation for later learning.
  • Relevant to our pupils and their surroundings.
  • Underpinned by excellent teaching and supported by innovative technology.

Curriculum Provision

As an academy, Gorse Hill must teach a broad and balanced curriculum, including English, maths, and Science. We must also teach religious education. In order to provide the children with a broad and balanced curriculum, we incorporate the national curriculum (introduced September 2014).

The national curriculum is a set of subjects and is organised into blocks of years called key stages (KS). At Gorse Hill, we have three key stages.

  • The Foundation Stage: Nursery and Reception Classes
  • Key Stage One: Years 1 and 2
  • Key Stage Two: Years 3, 4, 5, and 6

Within the national curriculum, there are core subjects and non-core subjects.

The core subjects are:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science

The non-core subjects are:

  • Art and Design
  • Computing
  • Design and Technology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Modern Foreign Language (at KS2)

We also make provision for the teaching of religious education and personal, social, health, and citizenship (PSHE and C)
